Lights, Camera, Action: Introducing IGTV

It’s been an exciting week here at mooch with a new member Hannah, Marketing Executive, joining the team. Hannah has a keen interest in social media marketing and will be keeping a close eye on the latest features, trends and tips. Check out Hannah’s first blog here!

What is it?

IGTV is a new feature which has been created by Instagram where users can upload longer, 10 minute or 1 hour videos instead of the normal 1 minute restriction. The length depends on your following, those with a larger amount of followers that have more influence are allowed 1 hour, whilst those with a smaller following are allowed 10 minutes. The videos are uploaded in a vertical 9:16 format and can be watched either via the dedicated IGTV app, the original Instagram App or on desktop through a unique link.

The dedicated app is easy to use. As soon as it is opened, videos start playing just as a TV would when it is first turned on. If you swipe up on the screen, more content can be discovered through 4 tabs: ‘For you’, ‘Following’, ‘Popular’, and ‘Continue Watching’. Additionally the videos can be liked, shared via direct message, and commented on.

How can it help your business?

IGTV is a unique way to engage with followers and customers and communicate your brand message. Using IGTV increases the chance of your message being received, as users are usually searching for a more in-depth viewing experience when using the feature. Videos can be used to introduce your organisation and team, as well as to create awareness of your brand and the products/ services you provide. Including a call to action by adding multiple links to the description of videos can help to drive traffic to your website.

IGTV can also be used by businesses to market their products through how-to videos, tutorials and product demonstrations. Using video to share product information and industry knowledge can increase engagement and establish credibility and thought leadership within your industry.

Why not use this exciting new feature to interview employees in your organisation or provide answers to frequently asked questions? Behind the scenes video content is also a great way to communicate your brand personality and show your team working on a campaign, event, or project. Not only can you show off about the hard work your employees do, you can also build trust and relationships with audiences.

Design Inspiration: Cutting Edge Backgrounds

Want to keep ahead of the latest design trends? Choosing the right background design for your website and branding projects can be difficult, especially as it’s so easy for some background textures and styles to become quickly out-dated.

A good background should complement the overall design and add focus to foreground content without distracting or reducing the impact of text and images. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next project and want to explore new trends for backgrounds, check out our favourite styles from the Shutterstock on-trend design blog here.

Metallic Marble

Following on from the natural luxury trend that we saw at the beginning of 2018 that we spoke about here, we’ve seen marble in design time and time again. In background design, the marble texture is now being enhanced with gold, silver and copper, giving the natural stone an elegant feel and giving a high-end, luxurious and elegant appeal.

Creative Concrete

Concrete floors and walls are a popular way to make a style statement in interior design, and the effect has crept into design for backgrounds in 2018. The minimalist texture gives an industrial and urban feel to the backdrop of websites and projects. The soft grey colour provides a great neutral canvas, complementing monochrome design and also pairing beautifully with brighter elements and splashes of colour.

Playful Pastels

Youthful and fun pastel colours are well suited to backgrounds and large spaces to fill within design, being a great way to introduce a lot of colour without overwhelming audiences. The fresh, feel good colours are often associated with childhood and the positive associations create a sense of calmness and relaxation. The pale pink, powder blue and mint green colour palettes are often used in design to appeal to the Millennial market.

Essentially, duotone backgrounds are made up of two complementary colours, giving designers the opportunity to have fun and experiment with new and unique colour combinations. Duotone effects create eye-catching material that draw the eye and can be used in web design to encourage visitors to scroll to, and click on the desired call to action. With so many colour blends and options, you’re sure to find a duotone effect that works with your existing colour and design scheme.

A simple background change can refresh and add a modern touch to existing designs without the need for a complete overhaul. If you’re looking for cutting edge, on trend designs, why not get in touch today?

Memoji – A fantastic showcase of consumer facing augmented reality

Everybody has heard of emojis, small faces displaying emotions, that can be used as part of messages to add extra flare or emphasis. In fact, we love them here at Mooch. However, they often lack that personal touch, this is something that Apple have picked up on and delivered a fantastic solution to as part of their IOS 12 update for their latest iPhone. This solution comes in the form of Memojis.

Memojis make use of the new Iphone X, XS and XR’s front facing 3D camera to generate your very own Memoji by simply looking at your phone. Memoijs bring a whole new angle to the already famous emoji and Animoji features available on previous iPhone products, allowing users to create completely personalised emoji to express themselves in a new and exciting way. Some of many of the uses of the Memoji features include; adding more character to your voice messages and completely personalising messages with your friends and family!

Memoji tracks your movements in real time using the front-facing 3d camera on the newest iPhone models to allow you to send videos and gifs of your Memoji mimicking the actions and sounds you make! This removes all the limitations we have when using emoji, because the Memoji can replicate any facial expression you can possibly make, ensuring that your choice of Memoji matches your conversation. Although Memoji is technically a cosmetic update, may people feel that it adds much needed personalism and expression to texting and instant messaging services.

In the modern world, personalisation and uniqueness is everything in a phone, and we feel that Memoji has allowed users to have pure and true personalisation over them. Memoji allows users to really connect to the feeling that it is their phone, rather than a phone, because they exist as an augmented reality character within the device.

Apple also allow users to create as many Memoji characters as you want, meaning that you can choose from a wide selection of your created alter egos, depending on your mood on a given day. You can even use your Memoji to facetime and video call other iPhone users at any time, meaning that you don’t even need to show your real face to let others know that you’re there!

Memoji shows off some of the very best modern augmented and virtual reality technology working in union with animation. The technology used within the Memoji could potentially have massive uses in other industries, such as film and gaming. At Mooch, we also use technology like that used in Memoji, instead using the expertise and knowledge that our teams have on these subjects to bring you the very best augmented and virtual reality, animation and creative design services on the market. We take a lot of inspiration from Memoji and work to implement many of the genius ideas and technologies behind this feature into our own services.

Overall, we feel that Memoji is a fantastic product that has revolutionised the way we text and interact with our phones overall. We are extremely excited to see how the technology used behind Memoji can be used in the future, and what Apple intend to do next with this amazing feature!

Here at Mooch HQ, the team were straight onto downloading the latest iOS 12 update and built a digital avatar for each person – take a look here and let us know what you think!

If you have any questions about Mooch, Memoji’s or any other element of this article, please do not hesitate to contact us by email [email protected] or by telephone on 01527 592738.

5 Top Tips to Content Creation

We all know the benefits of content marketing (check out our blog here!), but we also know that the strategy is not always as easy as it seems. Creating up to date, relevant and engaging content that audiences actually search for and enjoy can be a huge challenge for marketers. We’re letting you in on our five top tips to content creation…

Stay Relevant and Research

Research is the core of all effective marketing content. Keeping up to date with the latest news and trends in your industry will allow you to write relevant and interesting content that will educate your audiences and show off your expertise in your field.

If readers visit your website, social media pages or blog and find that your content is inaccurate or out of date, this will negatively impact their perception of your business and expertise – no matter how good your products or services are.

Optimise for Search

Researching key words will tell you which topics your target audience find relevant and are searching for. Your findings will allow you to optimise content and improve search engine ranking and visibility to attract more traffic to your website, blog or social media.

Blogging is a great way to boost SEO quality, giving you an ideal opportunity to rank in search engines and drive traffic. Don’t forget, optimising your content for keywords is not about using the words as many times as possible. ‘Keyword stuffing’ will do your SEO ranking more harm than good!

Use a Call-to-Action

Without a call-to-action, content marketing is worth very little. Publishing useful information alone isn’t enough – you need to ensure that your readers take action that benefits your business.

Whether it’s submitting a contact form, visiting a landing page or following you on social media, your content should always leave audiences with a call-to-action that increases engagement and improves conversion rates.

Consider Your Audience

By understanding your audience’s motivation for reading your content and considering which stage in the buyer’s journey they are at, you can appropriately target them with content that is relevant and useful. For example, you may talk to your existing customers in a different way and with different information to potential and new customers – make sure you have something for everyone!

Analyse and Improve

Using tools like Google Analytics can help you identify which content types work better on which platforms, and what subject matters audiences respond well to. Think about what you want your content to achieve and figure out how you can measure these outcomes against your wider marketing objectives.

Why Video Marketing Matters

It is predicted that by 2019, 80% of online content will be video marketing meaning that consumers will spend even more time watching and engaging with video content. Video is quickly becoming the most effective way for businesses to reach their audiences who are continuously searching for informative and inspiring content.

Video marketing is an excellent way to build brand awareness, credibility and trust. By bringing your brand to life and telling stories through video, you can create a personality for your brand to build and nurture relationships with audiences.

Research has shown that 90% of customers report that videos help them to make purchase decisions, showing how video marketing can potentially increase sale conversions. What’s more, video provides sharable content on social media and video presence on websites and landing pages can also improve your SEO ranking.

In terms of content, options are endless. It’s worth considering at which point of the customer journey your target audience will be at and whether you should educate them with product or service information to inspire action to purchase, or whether you’re targeting existing customers who may benefit from tutorials, demonstrations and ‘How To’ videos. Other powerful video content could include event videos, case studies, Q&A’s, animations and virtual and augmented reality.

Keeping your eye on trends in video marketing will help you to plan effective content. For example, live video is a powerful new tool in the box, attracting audiences across a range of platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Personalised and ephemeral video content such as Snapchat are also gaining momentum and finding their way into video marketing strategies.

Understanding the KPIs of your video campaign will allow you to measure your efforts against wider marketing objectives. Whether it’s increased web traffic, engagement, conversions or social shares, there are a range of metrics that can help you to perfect your video marketing strategy.

Here at mooch, we have worked with many clients on a range of video and 3D animation projects. Whether you’re looking for a complete strategy or a one off marketing video, we can help create engaging content to meet your objectives. Love Island 2018: Which Brands are on Board?

The Flack is back on ITV this summer with series 4 of Love Island. Love it or hate it, the show has received a record breaking number of viewers and it seems this year, the Love Island bug has spread further than ever.

With 3.4 million viewers tuning in to the launch show, many brands including Missguided, Rimmel, Samsung and Ministry of Sound have seen an opportunity to engage with target markets and use the islanders as influencers, allowing audiences to buy into the Love Island lifestyle – whether it’s listening to the same music, using the same make up or wearing the same swimsuit.

As the official sponsor of the show, Superdrug have launched a range of exclusive Love Island merchandise including cosmetic bags, bronzing products and make up ranges to help viewers get summer and holiday ready. To support the sponsorship, Superdrug have created a range of content marketing to stimulate interest in the products including blogs, Island news and social media posts to engage with audiences.

One of the major partnerships is undoubtedly Missguided, who have struck a deal to style the Islanders. With many of us flicking through our phones whilst watching the show, Missguided have utilised social media advertising and the Love Island app to allow viewers to shop the Islander’s outfits as they see them on screen. This includes an ‘Island Style’ section on the app and Missguided’s website itself. According to Marketing Week, Missguided have reported a huge 40% increase in sales during the evenings when Love Island is on television.

Jet2holiday is the official travel partner of this series, with many youngsters longing to jet off to Majorca and other sunny destinations in the search for love this summer. The package holiday company has used TV and digital marketing throughout the series with a competition offering money-can’t-buy tickets to the Love Island final on the Island itself.

Other partners in on the action include Lucozade, Echo Falls, Kelloggs and Samsung, who have supplied the phones for the Islander selfies and those ‘I’ve got a text!’ moments.

There’s no denying that Love Island’s success is mostly built around the appropriate partnerships which have allowed brands to join conversations in real time with those who are genuinely interested in where Dani Dyer’s dress is from and which camera phone Megan and Rosie used to take those selfies.

5 Ways Your Business Should Be Using Instagram Stories

Instagram stories are a powerful tool for businesses to engage with audiences and develop and nurture customer relationships. The feature gives brands the opportunity to showcase their brand personality with fun and creative attention-grabbing content. Check out our 5 top tips on how your business could be using Instagram here…

Drive traffic to… wherever you like!

If your business account has more than 10,000 followers, you can add a swipe up call-to-action to your Instagram story to drive traffic to an outbound link. This could be to your website for users to learn more about your products and services, or other external pages such as a blog, article or landing page, extending the users journey.

Use highlights

Ephemeral Instagram stories as we know them are changing. The Instagram highlights feature allows you to create permanent collections of stories, which can be grouped together into separate archives that will live on your profile for as long as you like. Highlights are proving popular with businesses to showcase different products, collections, topics, events and campaigns, helping users to quickly find content they’re interested in.

You can still use hashtags

Just because the post won’t stick around forever, it doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of hashtags and geotags. They are a great way to increase reach and great news – tags used on stories will still appear in the search results meaning your content can still be discovered using your popular words and phrases.

Test your content and ideas

Instagram stories present a great opportunity for businesses to ‘test’ content and ideas for potential future post. If a particular subject or content gets a great response you could consider using the content for a permanent post. The poll feature on Instagram stories is another great way for businesses to collect real time feedback from audiences. Why not ask what your followers which products are their favourite or even what they would like to see more of on your feed?

Go Live

Another great feature of Instagram stories is the ability to ‘Go Live’ to your followers. Although quite possibly a daunting prospect, going live is a great way to drive engagement and have some fun with your followers. A few ideas on how you could use the live feature on Instagram include Q&A sessions, revealing a competition winner, product demonstrations and giving audiences a sneak peak of behind the scenes activity or events.

When used alongside an effective social media plan, Instagram stories provide a great way to engage with audiences in informal, creative and exciting ways, and what’s more – it’s free! This week we’re loving… Microinteractions!

Microinteractions are one of the biggest current UX trends. A microinteraction is an animated or visual response that occurs as a result of a specific action that a user performs. Almost all applications are filled with them – they play a large part in our digital lives, even if we don’t always notice them.

The best thing about microinteractions is that they can be used on a variety of platforms in a number of ways, for example when a button is clicked, settings are adjusted, when a feature is switched on or off, when a user receives a notification or when any other action is completed.

Microinteractions are a great way of letting users know that their action has been accepted and that the system is doing what it should be in response via instant feedback. They can also be used to subtly give information, guidance and even on-site navigation.

Using microinteractions can encourage users to interact with your site based on your desired calls to action, whether it’s clicking a button or liking and sharing content. When designed correctly, they can add surprise and humour, creating engaging and entertaining experiences.

Poorly designed microinteractions can damage user experience. To avoid this, they should be small, simple and should attract the attention of users whilst not distracting or interrupting them. Microinteractions can be designed to cleverly form a natural part of the application design and help the experience to flow.

A little animation can go along way towards enhancing user experience, making an application more enjoyable to use and increasing user engagement. You can check out some great examples of microinteractions here!
